My name is Kevin Brinkman and I'm an English/Science teacher in Chicago. The urge to attempt a long-distance hike (or Thru-Hike) began in 2010 when 4 of my friends hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from the border of the US and Mexico in California to the Canadian border in Washington. Witnessing 4 close friends put themselves through such a challenging, rewarding journey immediately changed my perspective about what our bodies are capable of.
I've never been much of a runner, or swimmer, so when I cheered for friends as they crossed the finish lines for marathons and triathlons, I always felt a bit of disappointment knowing that those things felt out of reach and not in line with my own personal goals. I've been obsessive about fitness at times and have always hoped to accomplish a greater goal than working out for 100 days in a row or biking from Chicago to Wisconsin. The John Muir Trail, which stretches for 220-miles from Yosemite Valley to Mt. Whitney is my answer to this. less

Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization -- with more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge to move away from the dirty fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and toward a clean energy economy. less
