Access to water is never a concern of mine. Im fortunate enough to have a life full of sinks, toilets, and showers. Bottled water is a barely a dent in the wallet and too often wasted and taken for granted. Because most of us dont interact daily with the 2.1 billion people without safe drinking water or hear about all 185,000 people who die from water-related diseases yearly, raising awareness and money for clean water is not something that crosses our minds (or at least my mind) on a regular basis.
The thought of doing something for this cause came to me after I decided I wanted to tackle my home section of the AT this April before moving to the other side of the country this coming June. Ill fill up my pack with filtered water at the start of my trek at Fontana dam and follow the AT north until I hit the Virginia border, using various forms of water filtration along the way. In total, the route is 260 miles with 63,000+ feet of elevation gain across some of the most beautiful mountains and landscapes in TN/NC. Coming out to right around 37 miles per day, this run/hike/crawl will be the ultimate goodbye to the state where I have lived for the past 24 years.
I have the opportunity to chase something I love (spending 7 days on one of my favorite trails), and this wouldnt be possible without the ease of access I have to safe drinking water and filtration devices. It is my hope that this week on the AT will further open the eyes of myself and others to how fortunate we are to have access to clean water and how urgent it is that we reach out, even in a small way, to help others who are not as fortunate.
If this sounds like a cause you can get behind, donate to Water for People! This is a 501(c)3 charity organization fully dedicated to providing safe water and sanitation services worldwide. From as little as 1 penny per mile (thats $2.60 total IF I finish the whole route), you can help make a difference! less

1.8 billion people around the world don't have access to safe water and 2.4 billion lack access to adequate sanitation. Women and children spend more than 4 hours walking for water each day, and more than 840,000 people die each year from water-related diseases.
We're here to change that. We want to see communities break free from the cycle of poverty and spend time growing, learning, and thriving, instead of walking for water and fighting off illness. less
