In February of 2014 my mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 esophageal cancer. She lost a short, but vicious battle in June of that year.
The summer of 2015 I set out to walk 550 miles of the Camino de Santiago in Spain in her honor. Due to circumstances that were completely beyond my control, I had to return to the States without completing the miles I had set forth to do. I returned in 2016 to walk the remaining miles, but the feeling of not 'getting it right the first time' simply will not go away.
For this reason, and many others, I decided that after my retirement from public education (four years after my initial trip to Spain) I will make an attempt at a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail...four times the distance of the Camino. less
